So if you want to paint your terra cotta pots, this article has everything you need to get started…
Can You Paint Terra Cotta Pots?
Yes, you can paint terra cotta plant pots. This is because terra cotta is a kind of clay used for making pottery. The best way to do this is to use acrylic paints. Acrylics are water-based and will dry quickly. To avoid cracking, apply two coats of acrylic paint. Let the first coat dry for 15 minutes, then apply another coat. When painting the pot, start at the top and work down. You will also need to use a brush to apply the paint.
While using acrylic paint is recommended, we have also found that latex paints can be used to paint your clay pots. If you are interested in painting your plant pots, then we have provided instructions in the section below, where we have also included a list of supplies you will need.
What You Will Need
Before you can start painting your terra cotta pots, you will need to make sure that you have the right supplies.
- Terra cotta pots
- All-purpose aerosol waterproof sealer
- Painter’s tape (ScotchBlue)
- Drop cloth
- Interior/exterior primer (water or oil-based)
- Later paint (interior, exterior, chalky finish or craft)
- Flat edged paint brush
- High gloss clear sealer
How To Paint Terra Cotta Pots
Now that you understand what you will need, let’s take a look at how you can paint your cotta pots to give them a new and vibrant look:
Step 1: Clean The Pots
To start painting your terra cotta pots, you will need to make sure that the pots are clean and free from dust and debris.
This can be done by washing them with water and allowing them to dry completely in the sun. Once the pots are dry, you will need to seal the inside and outside with a waterproof aerosol sealer. When spraying the pots, it is important that you remember to spray the bottom.
For the best results, we recommend following the manufacturer’s direction, although two coats of sealer should be enough. Allow the product to dry for 24 hours and then move on to the next step.
What Aerosol Sealer Should You Use?
There are several waterproof sealers that you can use. However, we recommend choosing a product that seals concrete, cement and other hard materials. You can usually find sealers in the paint and stain departments of your local hardware store.
Step 2: Prime The Pots
For the second step, you will need to prime the outside of your pots with a good-quality all-surface primer. To do this, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. However, if you intend to use chalky finish paint to decorate your pots, then you can skip this step.
Unlike other paints, chalky finish paints do not require a primer to adhere to a surface and can be applied when the sealer has dried.
Step 3: Lay Out The Design
When the pots have been sealed and primed, it’s time to start laying out the design, which means you will need to grab your painter’s tape.
While we recommend using ScotchBlue, there are other varieties of painter’s tape that can also be used to complete this step.
To start creating your design, you will need to lay out the tape in various shapes and patterns. This can be anything from zigzags, checkers or stripes. To create the stripes, all you have to do is wrap the tape around the pot and the smooth edges. Once the pots have been painted, you should be able to remove the tape cleanly, which will reveal straight and defined lines.
Step 4: Paint The Pots
Now it’s time to paint! To start painting your plant pots, you can use either interior or exterior paint, acrylic craft paint or chalky finish paint. However, it is also possible to use all three to produce a more textured finish.
Start by applying the paint to the pots in bands of color, then slowly remove the tape before the paint dries. This should create a clean and crisp line, which will give the pots a more professional and vibrant look. Wait for the fresh paint to dry, and then continue the same process until your pot is covered in bands of color.
If you need to place tape over the sections that you have already painted, then we recommend using the painter’s tape, as this has a lighter adhesive and will not damage the final design.
When it comes to painting the top rim of the pot, it is advisable to bring the paint a few inches down the inside, as this will then be hidden by the soil. You can then use stencils, stamps or freehand painting to decorate and embellish the pots even further.
Step 5: Glaze The Pots
For the final step, you will need to glaze and seal your freshly painted pots. However, you must make sure the paint is dry before you do this.
For the best results, we recommend waiting 24 hours before beginning the sealing process. To complete this step, you will need to use a clear, high-gloss sealer (such as spray shellac, clear lacquer, acrylic spray sealer or gloss sealer). These products can be found in the paint sections of your local hardware stores and can be purchased for a reasonable price.
We would recommend using a super high-gloss spray sealer, which will need to be applied 2-3 times for an even coat. This should make the pots shine like glass, which means they can now be planted and placed in your garden or on your patio.
Terra cotta pots are made from clay, which means they can be painted with a range of different products, from acrylic to latex paint.
While the process of painting your plant pots can be a little complicated, it can still be accomplished by using the right supplies and some creative ambition.
